School Sports Partnerships

School Sports Partnerships

In Hampshire there are 10 School Sports Partnerships (SSPs) and one each in the unitary authorities of Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight. All schools across all age phases are part of one of these SSPs. These partnerships are a central part of the ‘PE and Sport Strategy for Young People’ (PESSYP), which aims to improve the quantity and quality of PE and sports undertaken by young people aged 5-19 in England.

The SSPs, in conjunction with specialist sports colleges, national governing bodies of sport, community providers and the county sports partnership will work to ensure that all 5-16 year olds have access to two hours PE and three hours beyond the curriculum and that 16-19 year olds have three hours of sport outside of the curriculum.

The ‘PE and Sport Strategy for Young People’ has 10 strands:

1.                  Club links
2.                  Coaching
3.                  Competition
4.                  Continuing professional development
5.                  Disability
6.                  Extending activities
7.                  Gifted and talented
8.                  Infrastructure
9.                  Leadership and volunteering
10.                Swimming.

Each partnership is managed by a Partnership Development Manager (PDM) – contact details can be found on this site. In addition, Hampshire has a team of eight Competition Managers (CMs) working across the whole of Hampshire and the three unitary authorities, under the direction of the Senior Competition Manager (SCM). Contact details and information about the work of the Competition Managers can be found on this site.

From September 2008, a team of Further Education Sports Co-ordinators (FESCOs) based in the school sports partnerships, will work with young people 16-19 to enable them to have access to three hours of sport.
